What's up with the EMS insurance fee?

I recently placed an order for something from a supplier located in Cameroon. After placing my order and shipping the payment, they informed me that my product would be shipped using EMS Postal Service. Almost immediately, EMS contacted me telling em that I needed to ship them an insurance fee of approximately $400 dollars, plus an extraction fee of $50 for their time and care. Since I was only ordering $200 worth of goods, I am disinclined to send them this money. A few questions:

1. Am I being scammed? (The obvious one)

2. Is there an way for them to ship my goods without insurance? I understand that my parcel could be lost or damaged.

Thanks for any help or experience in this matter. What's up with the EMS insurance fee?
Of course it's a scam. I don't know what you mean by 'shipping the payment, if you mailed it and this is only a few days old, they don't have it yet and you can stop payment on the check or, maybe, the money order. But if you sent the funds electronically, you're probably out that money.

Cameroon is Nigeria's lesser-known cousin. What's up with the EMS insurance fee?
1. Yes. (obvious)

2. Absolutely. But the point of the scam, is to keep suckering you into paying more and more money. Next it will be export fees, tarrifs, customs fees, etc. It won't end until you stop paying them.

There is no item. Your best bet, is to try to recover the money you sent. But most likely, it was "wired", which is also how the scammers do it, because it's untracable, and unrecoverable. What's up with the EMS insurance fee?
1. Yes.

2. No. There is also no way for them to be shipped with insurance, because they (the "goods") do not exist.

    1. I made an order to this cameroon supplier and it was the same damn problem. I just told the to cancel the shipment and they told me that they cant and i know every shipment can be cancelled. So i didnt autorice this special considerations about the shipment. So i sent an e mail cancelling and now they are saying that they cant cancel tha shipment so my package will be in quarantine and they will proceed legally. Do you think this is possibly?

    6. I also got caught with this. I purchased from a legit online shop in the USA.
They used ems...the next day I got an email from "ems" asking for this "insurance".
So ok it seems I got caught with this scam but what about my legitimate package. Is it still coming?

    8. Hi I just got scammed with the same thing ordered a product for $140 and they said my shipment will get here in exactly 3 business days and I got a email in my spam folder labeled ems delivery notification I opened it and they said the package was being sent discreet and I need to pay $550 refundable insurance fee. I only paid $140 for the package so that ayutomatically raised red flags. They also sent me a fake tracking number and a link that did not work. I sent a message telling them how I caught them in their scam and I got a message back saying I should choose my words wisely and that they will easily contact the authorities if I don't pay the so called insurance. Total scam everyone!! If u did order anything from these scammers consider that money lost you will not receive a package. I just thank God I didn't spend alot because they did want me to pay $500 for the item but I told them I only had $140 thinking they cut me a deal. Strait up fake guys. I'm sorry for anyone who fell for this.
