20 years in U.S. Postal service and NO benefits? Is this true?

I have a relative who, after 20 years of delivering mail, has very bad chronic neck and back pain and has been unable to work for several months.

He claims that he gets no disability from the government AT ALL and is 5 months behind on his mortgage. Also, apparently he needs surgery and does not have any health insurance. He says there is no-one where he works that he can go to for help.

I find this impossible to believe. Anyone know anything about this?20 years in U.S. Postal service and NO benefits? Is this true?
While membership in the union is nearly ninety percent, you aren't forced to join it.

Ten percent of letter carriers aren't in the union. It may be your relative decided he didn't want to be a union member.
Union membership is voluntary. If you don't choose to belong to it, you don't pay dues and you don't get their benefits or representation. Its not discriminatory, and being forced to join a union is illegal. Many feel they are ok on their own.

I find it hard to believe. my father worked for the federal government and got excellent health insurance and benefits. my mother still gets these benefits even though Dad's been gone for over 20 years. federal government employees get the best benefits.
Knowing about the Letter Carriers Union, I find this impossible to digest. If this is actually true, tell them to go to their union representative. Ask them to intercede on his behalf.20 years in U.S. Postal service and NO benefits? Is this true?
He is, undoubtedly, lying to you...for what reason, i cannot fathom...
